Gay couples line up for licenses as Illinois' civil union law takes effect
More than 75 couples were in line by the time the doors opened early at 7:30a.m. at the Cook County Building in downtown Chicago, where the vital records office will stay open until 7 p.m. to accommodate couples. Officials said they expect to issue about 2,000 licenses the first day.

At the head of the line were Lakeesha Harris and Janean Watkins, who got there at midnight. The Chicago couple, together for 10 years, have six children and a home but say they always felt relegated to second-class status, until now.

"The Flying of The Angels": Festival of Maria SS Lauretana

One of my first YouTube videos.

108th Annual Festival Honoring Maria SS Lauretana Society of Altaville Micilia

This festival and it's tradition began in Altaville Micilia, Sicily. It was first brought here to America in 1900 when the procession and the "Flying of Angels" made it way to the near north Chicago neighborhood of Cabrini Green.

In recent years this tradition is continued every Labor Day Weekend in the western suburb of Berwyn, Illinois.

The Maria Santisima (S.S) Lauretana Society
is composed of three groups:

The "Deputazoine", who administer the festival wear yellow; The "Sorelanza", the Womans Guild, wear maroon dresses; and "The Fratalanza" or Brotherhood, or "The Maroons", who's job it is to carry the shrine.

The music was supplied on scene by the Sicilian Band of Chicago, who accompanied the shrine through the fest.

An Oldie but a Woodie: The United Ancient Order of Druids Monument

Detailed and compendious account of A.O.D. & U.A.O.D
http://www.druidicdawn.org/node/1913

From Neo-Pagan web site:
http://www.neopagan.net/MesoDruids.html
In 1781 c.e., Henry Hurle set up the "Ancient Order of Druids" ("A.O.D."), which is sometimes just called the "Druid Order," ("D.O."), as were a few other groups, leading to no end of historical confusion. Hurle's group was a secret society based on Masonic patterns — not surprising, since Hurle was a carpenter and house builder, and thus would have been familiar with Masonry. The A.O.D., like most of the similar mystical societies formed at the time, was heavily influenced by Jacob Boehme.

(Jacob Boehme, 1675-1724 c.e., was a Protestant Christian mystic, greatly involved with alchemy, hermeticism and Christian Cabala, as well as being a student of the famous Meister Eckhart. His mystical writings attempted to reconcile all these influences and had a tremendous impact upon later generations of mystical Christians, Rosicrucians, Freemasons and Theosophists.)

In 1833, the secret society founded by Hurle apparently split up over the question of whether it should be mainly a "benefit" (charitable) society or a mystical one. The majority voted for being a charitable society and changed its name to the "United Ancient Order of Druids" ("U.A.O.D."). This group, with branches all over the world, still exists as a charitable and fraternal organization rather like the Elks or Shriners, with both their membership and their rituals overlapping heavily with those of mainstream Masonry.

Occupy Chicago holds a Die-In on the corner of LaSalle & Jackson, in front of the Chicago Federal Reserve Bank, the Chicago Board of Trade and the Bank of America.

Occupy then leads a march to the Congress hotel, where housekeeping and other laborers have been on strike for better wages and conditions for over eight years.

Still, strikers like Leticia Aritzmendi, a mother of six, including one child with cancer, aren't giving up. "I'm gonna continue this fight because it's very important. Not only for me, for every family," she said.

Wage Theft Protest - Little Village Car Wash - Arise Chicago

Arise Chicago
http://www.icontact-archive.com/ZCyP2A7FHTBXkUdUXY5V03n2Mz-joKi4?w=1
Carlos worked at a car wash and body shop on the Southwest Side for 11 years, working about 70 hours most weeks. He lost the majority of one of his thumbs in an accident in the shop.

While cleaning cars, he and his co-workers were never paid an hourly wage—they were only paid tips. This meant that some days, if business was slow, he made as little as $15 total for 12 hours of work. Even on days when tips were good, they never received an amount equal to the minimum wage—to say nothing of overtime.

Arise has made multiple attempts to reach out to the business's owner to discuss the matter, but he has been unresponsive. Paying workers below the minimum wage and refusing to pay overtime is illegal and immoral. Carlos and a group of supporters are returning to his former employer to demand that he be paid what he is owed, gathering outside holding squeegees and giant sponges.

Occupy Chicago supports open dialogue on Palestine

Chuck Goudie of ABC/Chicago "I-Team" investigative report on Occupy Chicago claimed "local Jewish leaders" are concerned over "growing antisemitic overtones in the Occupy movement". "Vein of anti-Semitism within Occupy demonstrations has Jewish leaders concerned" - is the header of the http file on this story. That can be read in the tab portion of your browser. The title on the page (Editor's Version) presently reads: "Occupy protests have Jewish leaders concerned"

The video clips begin with footage of flash/concussion teargas grenades going off in the streets of Oakland, California - although Mr. Goudie's focus is on a local Palestinian speaker whom he links to Occupy Chicago. Other images of disturbing signs and confrontations are also from outside Chicago. The only "Jewish Leader" seen on this "I-Team Report" is a representative of the Jewish Defense League.

"One of the things the Occupy movement is deeply concerned with is the condition of free speech and first amendment rights in this country. Everyone has the right to express their views. Occupy Chicago does not endorse one political, philosophical, or spiritual view over another. We all have the right to speak our minds. Free speech is a necessity of true democracy.

This movement has not spread across the globe because of an Israel-versus-Palestine debate. We are here to protest the influence money has on politics, how our democracy is being swung by private interests and big corporations."

Occupy The Hood - Chicago SunTimes Mary Mitchell, OC "lacked diversity" ...

Occupy The Hood is an active component of Occupy Chicago.

The Chicago Sun-Times reporter Mary Mitchell happened to observe one event at City Hall involving teachers and community organizers. Mitchell concluded from her brief exchanges that Occupy Chicago "lacked diversity".

"But what really struck me was the small number of black and brown people among the marchers. I had to hunt for Brian Johnson, a 40-year-old African-American male who was surrounded by a group of college-age white males wearing bandanas"

It's hard to understand what it is that Mitchell is trying to imply. Either she is acknowledging a problem with inequity in America that is larger than the scope of Occupy - Or - she expects Occupy to expropriate racial discontent and add to what she imagines the Occupy popular mandate to be.

Police again arrest Occupy Chicago protesters in Grant Park
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/chi-occupy-chicago-aims-to-...
Chicago police arrested about 130 Occupy Chicago protesters starting about 1 a.m. today after the group returned to Grant Park for the second weekend Saturday night and tried to maintain a camp in the park after its official closing time.

Police estimated that the crowd that showed up for a rally earlier in the evening peaked at around 3,000 people by the time protesters arrived in Congress Plaza at Michigan Avenue and Congress Parkway after a march from Federal Plaza in the Loop.

As the 11 p.m. park closing approached, more than 100 people decided to stay in Congress Plaza in the park as several hundred more moved onto a nearby sidewalk or across Michigan Avenue, off park district property. Police announced several times that anyone still in the park would be arrested, and by midnight, about 100 people remained in the plaza, which had been cordoned off with police barricades.

The plaza was cleared by about 2:40 a.m., with about 130 people arrested, said Central Police District Cmdr. Christopher Kennedy.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milton_Friedman#Academic_career
Friedman rejected the use of fiscal policy as a tool of demand management; and he held that the government's role in the guidance of the economy should be restricted severely. Friedman wrote extensively on the Great Depression, which he termed the Great Contraction, arguing that it had been caused by an ordinary financial shock whose duration and seriousness were greatly increased by the subsequent contraction of the money supply caused by the misguided policies of the directors of the Federal Reserve.

"The Fed was largely responsible for converting what might have been a garden-variety recession, although perhaps a fairly severe one, into a major catastrophe. Instead of using its powers to offset the depression, it presided over a decline in the quantity of money by one-third from 1929 to 1933 ... Far from the depression being a failure of the free-enterprise system, it was a tragic failure of government." —Milton Friedman, Two Lucky People, 233

"We Belong Here" - A Day With Occupy Chicago
http://chicagoist.com/2011/09/27/we_belong_here_-_a_day_with_occupy.php?utm_s...
Since Sept. 17, activists have occupied the street, demanding some pretty big changes. As of today, occupy movements have sprung up in dozens of cities throughout the country, and though they face the rolling eyes of a public that's seen many a movement spark and burn out, they're not so easily dissuaded.

Occupy Chicago
http://occupychi.org/
Breaking up into small groups we engaged people and challenged their preconceptions of the movement as well as think critically about a system that is set up to keep them down and keep them sleeping. We had people of all walks of life come by to chat with us. Of memorable note was a Chinese national who is studying economics here in Chicago. After hearing about us through twitter, he came down to find out what we are all about. When asked why he stopped by, he responded "I came here to find out if what I was learning in economics is right." Our message is spreading across the world and our numbers are growing.

Memorial Day 2011 - Thousands of Confederate Dead Buried In Chicago from...

Uploaded by on May 25, 2011
"The Confederate dead here buried in concentric trenches were all private soldiers.

The monument to their memory is of Georgia granite, stands forty feet from the ground to the top of statue and was erected in July 1893 with funds mainly subscribed by liberal citizens of Chicago and camps of the United Confederate Veterans.

The bronze panels of the pedestal die represent:
On the East face - THE CALL TO ARMS;
On the West face - A VETERAN'S RETURN HOME;
And On the South face - A SOLDIER'S DEATH DREAM;

The bronze statue surmounting the battlemented cap of the column is a realistic representation of a Confederate infantry soldier after the surrender. The face expresses sorrow for the thousands of prison dead interred beneath.

The cannon, shot and shell ornamenting this Government lot in which both Union and Confederate dead are buried were purchased by the War Department under authority of an Act of Congress approved January 25th 1893. "

Remnants of the SS Eastland Disaster - Lost, Missing & Hidden

The Eastland Disaster, The Chicago Tribune
A summer excursion turns into the worst accident in the annals of Great Lakes shipping.
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/politics/chi-chicagodays-eastlanddisaster-...
As it was being cast loose from its moorings on the south bank of the Chicago River between LaSalle and Clark Streets, the Eastland slowly settled on its side. The ship was only a few feet from the wharf, where a large crowd of horrified spectators watched, and it was in only 20 feet of water. That, however, was deep enough to drown 844 people who were trapped or trampled below decks.Although most were young factory workers from Berwyn and Cicero, 21 entire families were wiped out.

"The screaming was terrible," one man told the Tribune, which devoted 11 pages of coverage to the disaster. "I watched one woman who seemed to be thrown from the top deck. . . . I saw her white hat float down the river, and that was all."

Greenpeace activists end 26 hour occupation of Fisk Power plant

From Greenpeace: 5/25/11

It's time to Quit Coal Chicago

The morning of May 24, 2011, before dawn, eight Greenpeace activists climbed the 450 foot smokestack at the Fisk power plant in Chicago. They are now staying up there to demand its operator shut down the dirty, dangerous Fisk and Crawford coal plants.

Running for more than 50 years, the Fisk and Crawford plants are among the oldest in the United States. More people, nearly one in four Chicagoans, live in range of these plants than any other coal plant in America.

Coal fired power plants kill between 13,000 and 34,000 people a year from for heart disease, cancer, and respiratory illness. That staggering figure includes 42 Chicagoans impacted by Fisk and Crawford. That’s why the communities surrounding the plants in Pilsen and Little Village, have been working to shut down these plant for years.

Its time its operator, Edison International, respect Chicago’s right to healthy communities and do just that.

Eight Greenpeace activists climbed a huge smokestack at a Pilsen coal plant on Tuesday and eight others rappelled under a Southwest Side bridge to prevent a coal barge from passing.

Both actions were set to coincide with a U.S. EPA public hearing on increased pollution controls from coal-burning plants.

The Greenpeace activists began climbing a smokestack at the Fisk power plant at 1111 W. Cermak Rd. about dawn, spokeswoman Molly Dorozenski said.

"It is a little bit windy. It is dirty and dusty — not the most comfortable place I've hung out," protester Kelly Mitchell said via cell phone Tuesday evening. "Our top priority has been safety and being protected from the elements."

LATEST: Ferrara Pan president says he is still with candy company
http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/breaking/chibrkbus-ferrara-pan-preside...
"The board of directors are 100 percent intact," Ferrara told the Tribune on Thursday. "The executive officers are intact prior to what happened over the last few days, no fewer, no less, and no different positions or titles."

Two people familiar with the matter said that Ferrara was barred from the building by security while the board conducted a vote that led to his ouster. They described the dispute as centering on the firm's finances. One of these people said that Ferrara was reinstated in a second board vote, held Wednesday.

Forest Park deputy chief Tom Aftanas confirmed that Ferrara was removed from the company's headquarters last Wednesday. Police responded to a disturbance call, and spent about 20 minutes at the family-owned candy company based in Forest Park. Aftanas said that Ferrara made the call to police, but after three officers arrived on the scene, it became clear that it was Ferrara who needed to be removed.

Det. Jarlath Heveran told the Forest Park Review that Ferrara had returned from a company meeting in Chicago where he was reportedly voted off the company's board by other members. Ferrara then returned to Forest Park and attempted to enter the company's headquarters but was denied access by security hired by newly elected President Jim Buffardi, the company's former treasurer, Heveran said.

"The building was secured by off-duty Chicago police officers who were employed by the Buffardi regime to keep all the old administration out," Heveran said.

The Ferrara family owns the business along with the Buffardi and Pagano families, though it's Mr. Ferrara who has run the company for years. According to sources familiar with the industry and close to the company, family members had become displeased with how Mr. Ferrara was running the company. "He would drop $35 to $40 million (on projects), and shareholders didn't like it," a source said. "They felt they weren't getting as much money."

Rep. Paul Ryan protesters harassed by nameless Rebel Pundit blogger - Po...

His video is now up on Rebel Pundit.com

We now have a clue to the identity of the man who harassed a rally to protest the visit of Rep. Paul Ryan at an address to the Economic Club of Chicago (but still no name, tsk!). A video has been released on the self styled "conservative news blog" The Rebel Pundit on Thursday, May 19, 2011.
http://rebelpundit.com/2011/05/19/exclusive-video-angry-mob-protests-paul-rya...

The full YouTube video is available here:
http://youtu.be/hKLJl4z_Vy8

Nowhere in the Rebel Pundit article, nor in the credits for the video, does the cameraman reveal his name, however.

Now we know that his purpose was to harass leaders of MoveOn.org over a blogger who SPOKE AT A PREVIOUS RALLY!!!

In this video we observe that he repeatedly refused to identify himself or his purpose. He is observed shouting non-sequitur questions at individuals and generally engaging in AMBUSH INTERVIEW TACTICS

MoveOn.org Stages Hostile Protest at Paul Ryan Event- Chicago, IL

  • @xdm45acp

I don't have any agenda either, or the need for gratuitous insults.

We see that you came with your personal loaded question. You asked it repeatedly. Few there had any idea what you were referring to ...since it have nothing to do with the event at hand. You still have it in your mind this question "exposes the left" ???

LOL! Just as I told you as we were standing together, you were nothing but a heckler. That's how hecklers are treated. Great footage from the heckler's perspective.

  • @dogstar7 They invited him to speak at their rally.

  • @dogstar7 You really assume a lot. I never said they invited him because he is racist... They are just the ones that didn't say what he said was inappropriate..

  • @xdm45acp

LOL! If you are going to harass people for what they DON'T say,it should keep very very busy. People DON'T say things every day! ROFL!

  • @dogstar7 Keep ROFL racist.

  • @dogstar7 I still don't understand why no one would answer the question. Oh, I know why, because the moveon organizers were going around telling everyone not to talk to me.. I guess that was a bad idea, and if any of them were capable of thinking and acting as individuals, maybe their tolerance for left wing racism wouldn't have been caught on camera.

  • @xdm45acp I don't know why you say MoveOn people didn't talk to you. They are in your video talking to you. They are responding to your question. Some answer the questions directly, others respond however they chose to respond. You didn't get the answer that you wanted. Isn't that what the MSM is criticized for? You had expectations that were not met by others. Life sucks when you wave a camera around.

  • @dogstar7 The answer I wanted?? The answer I thought would be given, is that it is not appropriate... I can't think of any circumstance it would be appropriate, but apparently there must be, or the individuals in the video, would have said its not. You think its appropriate, and I assume because you are racist, you say so on camera.

  • @xdm45acp I answer to the affirmative to any smear folks want to accuse me of. Is that the worst thing you could think of someone? It's just my way of getting that out of the way: Assume I am what you say. What does that prove? What do you hope to accomplish by "exposing racist on the left"? Are you a race mixer? Now I guess I don't understand. What point would you like "the left" to concede to you?

  • @dogstar7 I just think MoveOn.org should condemn racist elements within it's organization.

  • @xdm45acp

That's commendable of you. It's good of you to point out "racist elements" to MoveOn. Remind us again of Morelli's connection to MoveOn. Do they edit or publish his blog?

Rep. Paul Ryan Refuses To Meet With ADAPT Disabled Activists

Members of the advocate group ADAPT protest outside the Palmer House in Chicago after being denied another meeting with Rep. Paul Ryan, chairman of the House Budget Committee. Ryan's proposed budget would turn state Medicaid funding into a block grant to states. ADAPT wants to increase funding and earmark spending for individual care.

This interview was interrupted --- and ultimately DISRUPTED --- by a woman with a camera who refused to identify herself or the purpose of her recording. Her questions were argumentative and lead to a verbal altercation.

BECAUSE THE EXCHANGE THAT FOLLOWED THIS INTERVIEW WAS A DELIBERATE PROVOCATION OF THESE PROTESTERS, IT WILL NOT BE SEEN.

In this clip, we are told about over 100 disabled and their supporters arrested in Washington DC on May 3rd, 2011
http://adaptold.adapt.org/adaptpr/archive.php?mode=A&id=304;&sort=D

"Of the 60 million people counting on Medicaid right now, 8.5 million are
people with disabilities; 8.8 million are low income frail, elderly and
disabled individuals who rely on Medicaid to plug the gaps in Medicare
coverage, such as long term care. Medicaid pays for vital services such as
wheelchairs and prostheses for people with spinal cord injuries and other
physical disabilities; prescription drugs for people with mental illnesses
and other medical conditions; services to assist people with intellectual
disabilities to live and work in the community rather than be forced into
an institution; and screening programs to identify and diagnose
disabilities for children.

There is widespread support for services for the people with disabilities
and older Americans. According to a recent Washington Post-ABC News poll,
69% of Americans oppose cutting Medicaid. These results are consistent
with a 2010 Harris survey that found that 89% Americans supported a tax
increase to assure that people could receive services in their own homes,
rather than being forced into nursing facilities or other institutions.
The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) polls repeatedly find
that the vast majority of seniors want to age in their own homes with any
needed services.

"We cannot accept this invasion of our liberty any longer. The
institutional bias in federal and state policies steals our freedom, our
families, our homes, and our very lives," said Bruce Darling, an organizer
with Rochester ADAPT. "The Ryan Plan's claim of 'flexibility' is a lie.
We don't need flexibility in Medicaid cuts. We need flexibility in
Medicaid spending so people can choose the less expensive community
service options they want, and that will ultimately contain costs."

Celtic Cross headstone by Tiffany, A.C. McClurg, publisher of Tarzan, Du...

General Alexander C. McClurg (G.A.R.)
Graceland Cemetery, Chicago
Celtic Cross by Louis Comfort Tiffany

A.C. McClurg & Co. traces its origins to Chicago's oldest book and stationery store which was founded in 1844. The young Alexander C. McClurg went to work for the company, then known as S. C. Griggs, in 1859. McClurg resumed working for Griggs after returning from the Civil War with the rank of general. When the firm's premises were destroyed by fire in 1899, General McClurg decided to reorganize as a corporation with shares sold to employees. He died soon thereafter in 1901. Little publishing took place until 1914 when the firm negotiated what turned out to be its most profitable publication, Tarzan of the Apes by Edgar Rice Burroughs. McClurg & Co. went on to publish 10 more Tarzan titles. Eventually Burroughs set up his own company to deal with all iterations of his famous character.

Most authors who published with McClurg are fairly unknown, but some of the better-known authors include Felix Borowski (Standard Concert Guide/Standard Opera Guide), Edgar Rice Burroughs, Mary Hartwell Catherwood, W. E. B. Du Bois, Byron A. Dunn, Oscar J. Friend, Zane Grey, Edith Ogden Harrison, Margaret Hill McCarter, and Clarence E. Mulford, author of the Hopalong Cassidy books.

Farrakhan portrayed Gadhafi as a fellow revolutionary and longtime friend to the Nation of Islam, which used $3 million it borrowed from Libya in the 1970s to acquire its opulent headquarters on Chicago's South Side. Years later, a $5 million loan was used to pay back taxes and costs for the home of the movement's former leader Elijah Muhammad.

DogStar7 Visits The Vandalized The Gravesite Of Mike Todd - Elizabeth Taylor's 3rd Husband

Todd was born Avrom Hirsch Goldbogen in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Chaim Goldbogen (an Orthodox rabbi) and Sophia Hellerman, both Polish Jewish immigrants.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Todd

Mike Todd talks to a reporter about Elizabeth Taylor. "Miss Taylor? You mean Missus Todd."

On 22 March 1958, Todd's private plane Lucky Liz crashed near Grants, New Mexico. The plane, a twin-engine Lockheed Lodestar, suffered an engine failure while being flown grossly overloaded in icing conditions at an altitude which was too high to sustain flight with only one working engine under those conditions. The plane went out of control and crashed, killing all four on board.

Elizabeth Taylor Arrives At The Gravesite of Mike Todd - March 1958
Emotional footage of Elizabeth arriving at the funeral of Mike Todd
Beth Aaron Cemetery, Forest Park, Illinois - March 1958

His son, Mike Jr., wanted his father's body to be cremated after it was identified through dental records and brought to Albuquerque, but Taylor refused, saying he would not want cremation. Todd was buried in Forest Park, Illinois, at Beth Aaron Cemetery in plot 66, which is part of Jewish Waldheim there.

In his autobiography, Eddie Fisher, who considered himself to be Todd's best friend, stated: "There was a closed coffin, but I knew it was more for show than anything else. The plane had exploded on impact and whatever remains were found couldn't be identified....The only items recovered from the wreckage were Mike's wedding ring and a pair of platinum cuff links I'd given him."

The Los Angeles Times reported in 1977 that Fisher's story was false; Todd's remains were indeed recovered and buried in Forest Park, Illinois. The remains were desecrated by robbers, who broke into Todd's coffin looking for a $100,000 diamond ring which, according to rumor, Taylor had placed on her husband's finger prior to his burial. The bag containing Todd's remains was found under a tree near his burial plot; the bag and coffin had been sealed in Albuquerque after Todd's remains were identified following the 1958 crash. Todd's remains were once more identified through dental records and were reburied in a secret location.

http://www.slate.com/id/2091218/
In 1977, "Wise Guy" Anthony Pellicano found the body of Elizabeth Taylor's third husband, Mike Todd, which was stolen from a Chicago cemetary. In front of a camera crew from a local news station, Pellicano walked over to place seventy-five yards south of the excavated grave, reached under some leaves, and revealed a plastic bag of Todd's remains. Pellicano's rivals claimed he'd staged the entire episode for publicity.

Sept. 11, 1993, Los Angeles Times. Times reporters James Bates and Shawn Hubler write: Then there was the matter of producer Michael Todd's bones, which disappeared in 1977 from a Forest Park, Ill., cemetery. Todd had been married to actress Elizabeth Taylor when he died in a 1958 plane crash.

The grave robbery made headlines. Police scoured the cemetery in vain. Then a phone rang in the detective division. Pellicano said he had an informant; he knew where the bones were buried. Police met him at the graveyard. Pellicano had an anchorman in tow.

Todd's remains—a few bones and a melted belt buckle—were right on the cemetery grounds, under a pile of leaves and dirt about 75 yards from the grave. The grave robbers, Pellicano told police, had been after a 10-carat diamond ring, a gift from Taylor that they mistakenly had believed was inside Todd's casket.

A 1983 government sentencing report maintains that a mobster-turned-informant told authorities that two mob figures were the ones who exhumed Todd. But the story making the rounds in Chicago even today is that Pellicano orchestrated the event to gain publicity in hopes of being hired to help find Chicago candy heiress Helen Brach, who disappeared in 1977.
